Recommendation:

Attached is a sample Workplace Gender Transition Policy for discussion. 

 

  • Does this item benefit all racial groups? Yes. Individuals from all racial groups identify as transgender. Specifically, black transgender women experience higher rates of discrimination and therefore poorer health and socioeconomic outcomes.  

  • Does this item benefit Community for All Ages? Yes. Individuals from all ages identify as transgender. Older transgender adults are at a significantly higher risk of poor health outcomes, including disability and depression.

  • Does this item exclude or disproportionately impact any social identities? If yes, what populations and why? No

    Details:


    The sample policy provides direction to Roeland Park staff on Gender Transitioning in the workplace. The policy provides clarity on a variety of questions that may arise when an employee is transitioning or identifying as a new gender. The City Attorney has formatted the sample as new section B.10 (page 16) in the Employee Handbook.

     

    Changes to the Employee Handbook are approved through a simple majority vote of the Council.
